Stanley Park Seawall - November 22 and 24 2013

Posted by Liron on Sunday, December 1, 2013
Like I said in my post about Lost Lagoon, I've been in Stanley park a lot lately, and much of this time has been on the seawall. Why? Partially because of this:

Yep, that's a lot of Surf Scoters! There are about 420 birds in that photo but that entire flock had around 3000 birds, and that day I counted over 6000 including another two large scoter flocks.

By the way, did you spot the male Black Scoter in that photo? :)

Yes, there were a lot of birds, and I spent a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes with them before moving on. Here are some shots of the birds in the flock:

Of course seeing the thousands of scoters is always amazing, but there are hidden treasures to be found among them. This flock of scoters had two Long-tailed Ducks, a male and a female. They were hard to pick out in the flock!

There were also a few hundred Barrow's Goldeneye with the flock, but they separated themselves from the scoters and were closer to shore in general.

Among the Barrow's Goldeneyes there were also some Common Goldeneyes, making for good shots as well:

Probably the best bird in the flock was one male Black Scoter. Being almost the exact same size and having similar colouring, can you imagine how hard it is to pick out this guy among 3000 Surf Scoters? During the 1 hour and 15 minutes I was watching the flock, I only managed to spot the Black Scoter twice. I managed some pretty good shots however, much better than the other times I have seen this bird (two times before in flight far away at Point Roberts), so I am very happy!:)

There were many other birds around on my two walks along the seawall, including these ones:
