Some recent photos

On April 11 2014, I ran into a fellow birder in Queen Elizabeth Park, who kindly told me about a hummingbird nest nearby. I found the nest, and had a great time watching the mother bring food to the young. The young were already quite old and have likely fledged by now. Also around were two Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet and more. A great afternoon walk! :)

I went through the park again the next day on my bike and ran into the birder, Cory, again! We both watched the hummingbirds again and while doing so an Osprey flew over, a year bird for me! :)

On April 13 2014 I participated in the Stanley Park Ecology Society's monthly bird count. It was a beautiful day and lots of volunteers were out to count birds. Highlights of the count included many Rufous Hummingbirds, some Anna's Hummingbirds, a few American Goldfinches, a Merlin, newly arrived swallows, many Yellow-rumped Warblers and one Orange-crowned Warbler (heard only). We also saw a Greater White-fronted Goose on the lagoon, probably the same bird that we saw on the lagoon on last month's count.

In addition to the birds mentioned above there were also lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets around, and this one gave a rare flash of its crown. Awesome! :)

Later that day I was at Lynn Canyon Park in North Vancouver... a beautiful spot:

As for birds lots of residents were singing in the forest, a sure sign of spring! Also, a male Pileated Woodpecker was busy applying the finishing touches to his nest. I saw him poke his head out of his nest cavity in the distance so I got closer, and after a few minutes he poked it out once more before flying out to feed on some nearby trees. I haven't seen very many of these in the past so it was very cool to see one at its nest! :)

It has been a great past while of birding! I hope to get out again this weekend and I am keeping my fingers crossed for good weather on the boat trip to Triangle Island the following weekend! :)
