Recent Birds - May 19-21 2013

Posted by birder on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
To start the day, I headed out to Queen Elizabeth Park in the morning on May 19th.

Queen Elizabeth Park is a great spot to find Western Tanager, and in the past couple of weeks I have gotten some great photos of tanagers there. The 19th was not different! I saw and photographed some Western Tanager:

Another bird willing to pose for me was not far from the tanagers. This Western Wood-Pewee was kept busy by flycatching and kept me busy taking photo of it:

I now heard a farmiliar call. It was a Cooper's Hawk! Knowing there is a nest in the park, I went over to the nest and sure enough, a hawk was perched in a tree near the nest:

The hawk then went and flew to the nest, and I took some more photos:

I now walked around a bit more, and came across some warblers. Mixed in with the warblers were one or two Warbling Vireo. I wasn't paying much attention to them however, because this Pacific-slope Flycatcher had landed in a tree:

It had been a great morning at Queen Elizabeth Park! I now went to Iona Island.

As I arrived, I spotted a male Yellow-headed Blackbird. I took some photos. I got even better ones a few minutes later of a different male. I like this wider habitat shot:

I walked around a bit, and soon, near where the other two Yellow-headed Blackbirds had been, I spotted two more Yellow-headed Blackbirds. These ones were females. They also were willing to have their photos taken:

My attention now turned to a pair of Osprey's circling around. Soon, one dove, and came up with what appears to be a stick:

Before I left Iona, this male Cinnamon Teal made an appearance:

I now spent the rest of the day in an another area of Richmond. This area is great for Chipping Sparrow and Bullock's Oriole, and today, I managed to see both.

The 19th had been a great day of birding!

On the 20th, the plan was to spend the day on a relatives boat. before I got on the boat, I found another Yellow-headed Blackbird. This one was a young male, and it was foraging along the beach of False Creek:

I now boarded the boat. We went through English Bay to Caufield Cove in West Vancouver. From the boat I managed to see many birds, including this Pelagic Cormorant:

The boat now docked at Caufield Cove in West Vancouver. Some birds in that area included these ones:

It was now time for the boat ride back through English Bay. From the boat when it was closer to False Creek, I managed to get a look at the Vanier Park Bald Eagle nest:

One last photo of the day was at False Creek of this Pelagic Cormorant swimming:

On the 21st (today), I didn't do any actual birding, but I was very excited to see this female Black-headed Grosbeak multiple times my backyard throughout the day:

It has been a great fast few days of birding!

Thanks for looking!
