Point Roberts - October 8 2012

Posted by birder on Thursday, October 11, 2012
On October the 8th, I went out to Point Roberts, a small town in the US just across the border. At the end of Gulf Road, I saw some Common Loons, Horned Grebes, cormorants, and more, but there were also some female Harlequin Ducks very close to the shore. I took some photos of them. Here is one:

I then continued on by car to Lighthouse Park. Here there were also many birds. These included two that were very close to shore, a Pigeon Guillemot and a Horned Grebe:

Horned Grebe (I am very happy with this photo, it is by far the best photo I have gotten of this specie!):

Other birds around included Common and Pacific Loons, Western and Red-necked Grebe, White-winged, Surf, and one Black Scoter (flying by), some Red-breasted Merganser, lots of Bonaparte's Gulls very far offshore, and more. Here are some photos I took of these birds:

I had a great time photographing all these birds, and now just before I had to leave, a few flocks of around 50-200 (more than one flock) shorebirds birds flew by. I took some flight photos, and I will post them once I have identified what type of sandpipers they were. Another cool animal before I left was 1 or 2 marine mammals. I assume they were porpoises, but if anybody knows better, I love to hear your opinions:
