Okanagan Big Day Challenge - May 18 2014

Posted by Liron on Thursday, May 22, 2014
A while back in Winter, I was contacted by Russell Cannings, who was trying to see if he could get enough teen birders in BC together to do a Big Day for the annual Okanagan Big Day Challenge that takes place during the May Meadowlark Festival in the Okanagan. He ended up getting over 10 teen birders! Great job Russ! It was an amazing weekend! On Saturday we did some warm-up birding in the southern Okanagan Valley, and on Sunday we did the big day which was done pretty much just inside the Vaseux Lake Christmas Bird Count circle. Many of us started at 2:00 AM and finished at 11:45 PM. An awesome day! We tallied 133 species and many people got lifers. It was an awesome experience full of awesome adventures! Our team was the Western Teenagers (tanager, teenager, get it?), but one car in particular named itself the Lost Birders. Read about all the adventures in the full trip report which is coming soon! For now here is the list of birds (and other animals) we saw on the day:
