Barred Owl - May 15 2013

Posted by birder on Wednesday, May 15, 2013
While I was walking in a park in southwestern BC today I rounded a corner, and found myself face-to-face with a Barred Owl! I backed away, and took some photos:

After watching the bird for a while, the bird flew up to a higher branch. It's attention was completely focused on something below it in the ferns and bushes. After a while, the bird lost attention on whatever it had detected on the ground below it. When a dog walked by, the bird stared down at the path:

I noticed a squirrel moving into the area, but I was not the first to notice. The owl was watching the squirrel as the squirrel jumped from branch to branch. The bird took a dive at the squirrel, then another, then another, and so on. Sometimes, when the squirrel came close to the path, the owl would dive about 5 feet in front me as it tried to catch the squirrel. Between each dive, the owl landed on a perches that were often very good for photos:

When the owl was perched and getting ready to swoop again, it would closely watch the squirrel, weather the squirrel was above or below.

Not even when the squirrel was directly above the owl did the owl loose sight of it:

Eventually, the squirrel got away and the owl went to sleep up in the trees.

What an amazing experience! It was the first time I had gotten very good photos of a Barred Owl.
